Sunflowers

Sunflowers are one of the most popular fall and summer flowers. They are known for their large diameter and beautiful bright yellow petals. The average sunflower has a diameter of 12-14 inches in the larger sizes. Now they can come smaller with just a 2-3-inch diameter and these are the ones that are most commonly used in floral arrangements. Also, depending on how mature the sunflower is they can either 34, 55, or 89 petals surrounding the middle of the flower.

Some of the most common ways a sunflower is used is in handheld bridal bouquets and vase arrangements for weddings. It is not very common to see sunflowers in just a normal everyday arrangement because they are very expensive. Another thing is that you can only get sunflowers when they are in season. Unlike many other flowers how you can get them all year round because of greenhouse growing, you can’t do that with sunflowers. The only time you can get them is in the late summer and all of fall season. This information adds on to them being very expensive because due to their immense popularity and minimal supply.

Even though I am throwing all of this information at you right now do not let it discourage you from buying sunflowers or from them still being your favorite flower because there are many other great benefits to them. Such as, they are very hardy flowers that can last up to 2 weeks long in a vase. This is because of there thick stem and ability to keep in the water they absorb. Although in order for them to really last this long I do suggest that you cut off all of the leaves on them because the leaves actually absorb the most water on the flower. They also have a beautiful sent to them as well that can brighten up the smell of any room.

When it comes to arranging other flowers with sun flowers it can be pretty hard because they are such a different looking flower. So, it makes the list even shorter on what goes best with them. Most of the other flowers that are used with sunflowers are roses and chrysanthemums. Not very many accent flowers go with sunflowers, so they usually are not used with them but if any are used with them it would be white misty. Although, lots of greenery is always used. Such as, leatherleaf, eucalyptus, bells of Ireland, and lemon leaf. As always, with vase arrangements as always change out the water every week and be sure to cut the stems at an angle about 1 cm off every 5-6 days. I hope this information makes you just as eager and excited as I am for sunflower season.
